I start, as most probably do, with two guns, one placed just under where the enemy enters, one one square away and to the left or right. This forces the enemy to start going up. I then add one more gun diagonally up from the second, and finally start building up to the top with guns. From that point on I use guns to shape the inside of the maze. I also make sure that the outer edges get missiles only.

I do the diagonal thing so that I can eventually place missiles along the edge. This has two advantages: enemy units go down quicker if they're being attacked from two sides, and the massed missile launchers along the edge help take out the carrier quicker.

I try to get three mines in a row – four when playing as an Admiral – and build them up as quickly as possible; if I don't the subs figure out a way to get past me and attack my base every time. I don't really see any advantage in the sub, although I'll usually put one about half way through the game just because.

Until about a third of the way through the game I upgrade all weapons (except for mines) once only. Once I've got five or six missiles and all guns and missiles have one upgrade I go back and start maxing them out, starting with the missiles first.

When the first carrier warning happens, I put a couple of missiles near each end of the base (my maze never gets anywhere near it before the game is over) to take care of aircraft. I build them up to max strength in between upgrading other things.

By about halfway through the game I can start amassing money and replace guns near the entrance to the maze with battleships with missiles on them. This really helps kill the carrier quickly.

I put all of my upgrades into Offensive first, then Technology. From Offensive I almost exclusively use 2X and 4X damage; as long as I keep using them I don't need to build my maze up excessively: I go up immediately, then straight back down, and ships rarely make it to the bottom of this first leg.

----------

So, critique away. I'd love to hear how other people's strategy differs from mine, especially with the choice and use of upgrades.

Sure would appreciate some screenshots.

I assume you're talking about St. Vincent Island.

Here's how I've achieved victory there.

Starting out: one gun upgraded to L2

All guns are quickly upgraded to L2.

At wave 46 my airstrip is activated and protected by two L3 rockets

At wave 65 all my guns are backed up by rockets, and the airstrip is upgraded to L2.

At wave 78 a sub almost slipped through and another L2 mine had to be added. I don't ever upgrade a mine past L2 since I can by another for the same cost, and upgrade to L2 for only $75.

This very unimaginative "non-maze" achieved flawless (no damage to base) victory. I added the destroyer to inflict more damage on the carriers. I'm still not able to kill them all though.

This failure could be because I've been tapping the special weapons in place on the tray rather than tapping and dragging them to an effective position on the battlefield. I finally got around to watching the help videos. Like Ma says, "He's stupid, but he's strong."
